Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)

As we age, the tone and shape of our eyelids can loosen and sag. This excess, puffy or sagging skin can make you appear more tired or older than you are. Eyelid lift or blepharoplasty can give your eyes a more youthful look by removing excess skin and bulging fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. The term “eyelid lift” is a misconception because the eyelid is not lifted during surgery.

Upper Blepharoplasty

For the upper eyelids, excess skin and fat are removed through an incision hidden in the natural eyelid crease. The incision is then closed with fine sutures. A blepharoplasty results in an improved, refreshed appearance and the creation of a prominent eyelid crease, giving the patient a more youthful look.

Lower Blepharoplasty

The goal of lower eyelid blepharoplasty is to create a smooth appearance as the lower eyelid meets the cheek, called the eyelid-cheek junction. Excess skin, prominent or undersized fat pads, or descent of the cheek can all lead an aged and tired appearance.

The simple procedure, called a transconjunctival approach uses incisions on the inside of the eyelid. This technique is perfect for removal, re-positioning, or adding fat to the eyelid to achieve an improved contour. A major advantage of this technique is the fact that all scars are hidden. Laser resurfacing or a chemical peel can be performed at the same time if desired, to smooth and tighten the lower lid skin.

If there is excess skin of the lower lid, the incision is made just below the lashes. This thin incision allows for removal of excess skin and fat and ability to tighten the eyelid resulting in a natural looking eyelid.

Upper and lower blepharoplasty can be performed together and also can be combined with other procedures such as eyebrow or forehead lift, midface lift, face lift, neck lift, or laser skin resurfacing.
